Go green: 10 tips for a sustainable office

Sustainability is a hot topic. Many people are trying to do their bit and live more consciously. In the business world, there is still a lot to be gained and fortunately, you can also take steps at the office to reduce the impact on the environment as much as possible. These tips will help you on your way to a more sustainable office.

  1. More plants
    Plants not only provide more oxygen in the air, but also the much-needed greenery in the workspace. So make sure there is at least one plant in every workspace.
  2. Limit the number of subscriptions
    We’re talking about newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Have you been subscribing to various newspapers and magazines for years? Then take a good look at which ones are really necessary. Of course it is nice for guests to have something to read while they are waiting for their appointment, but is it really necessary to offer so many different newspapers or magazines?
  3. Switch off the lights
    In rooms where nobody is present, there is no need to leave the lights on. Hang up notes to help colleagues remember to turn off the lights when they leave a room. It can also work to install lights with a motion sensor.
  4. Use the stand-by mode of devices
    Encourage employees to set their computers on standby. This way a computer uses less power when it is not used for a while.
  5. Place paper bins
    By placing paper bins in the office, you stimulate the re-use of paper. For example, prints that do not turn out well, but which do not otherwise contain sensitive information. Instead of throwing these papers away immediately, other colleagues can use them as scrap paper.
  6. Go for LED lighting
    Replace all bulbs in the office with the more economical and environmentally-friendly LED lights. The bulbs use up to 75% less energy and last three times as long as incandescent bulbs, for example. Because of their long life span, LED lamps are also a suitable option for smaller budgets.
  7. No more plastic or paper cups
    Paper or plastic coffee and tea cups create unnecessary extra waste. Replace them with reusable cups.
  8. No more paper towels
    Replace the paper towel dispenser in the toilets by ordinary towels. This saves a lot of waste.
  9. Recycle everything
    Place special bins for all kinds of waste in a prominent place in the kitchen or canteen. Hang clear instructions on what to put in which bin.
  10. Pull the plug out of the socket
    Do you also leave the plug in the socket when you are not using an appliance? Then the appliance continues to use power. So always remove the plug from the socket.

As you can see, there are many small steps you can take to make your work environment a little more environmentally friendly. All those steps together make for a pretty sustainable office!
